23 injured as train derails in Greece

ATHENS, Greece -- A passenger train traveling from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki derailed in central Greece on Saturday, injuring 23 people, authorities said. The Greek railway company, OSE, said the InterCity train derailed about 340 kilometers (210 miles) north of the capital.

It said the causes of the derailment were being investigated, and that “initial indications point to possible human error in traffic control.”

Twenty adults and three children were taken to a nearby hospital. Most were treated and released, but five of the injured remained in the hospital by early afternoon for observation, because of fractures, Fani Koutrouba, head of OSE’s train operations division, told The Associated Press. She added that one woman was in more serious condition, with multiple fractures.
