Syria says Paris, Damascus have interest in dialogue

CAIRO -- Four days after suspending diplomatic cooperation with Paris, Syria said on Sunday that it shared with France a common interest in dialogue on Middle East issues. “Our relations with France are relations between two states with common interests. The question of Lebanon was one of the elements of these relations, so why should we not go back to dialogue?” said Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem.

Moualem said last Wednesday that Syria was stopping cooperation with France on the grounds that Paris had been blaming Damascus for the failure of its diplomatic efforts in Lebanon, which has not had a president since Nov. 23.
