Iran detains one, accused of spreading Putin plot rumors

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran has detained a person accused of spreading rumors of a possible assassination attempt against Russian President Vladimir Putin planned during his visit to Tehran in October, the official news agency IRNA reported Tuesday. IRNA did not provide any details about the person or say when the detention occurred.

In October, a Kremlin spokesman said that Putin was told of a plot to assassinate him during his upcoming visit to Iran. Additionally, Russia’s official Interfax news agency, citing a source in the country’s special services, said suicide terrorists were trained to carry out the assassination.

Despite the rumor Putin visited Iran and met Iranian leaders to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues.
