Campers spend night waiting for Rose Parade

PASADENA, California -- Thousands of people swarmed the Rose Parade route Tuesday morning, jostling for prime spots for an event that this year was expected to include protests against the 2008 Beijing Olympics and President George W. Bush. Some 1,200 law enforcement officers were assigned to the parade to deal with any disruptions. The theme of this year's parade, the 119th edition, was "Passport to the World's Celebrations," and will feature 46 floats, 21 marching bands and 18 equestrian units.

One of the floats, honoring the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, is expected to be the subject of protests by members of the Chinese Falun Gong spiritual movement. Chinese Americans who claim they were victims of political or religious persecution in China are criticizing the US$400,000 (euro272,000) float.
