The Chinese sports commentator who shocked viewers with an anti-Australia rant during the soccer World Cup has resigned, Chinese media reported Friday.

In front page news in several newspapers in Beijing, Huang Jianxiang said he had resigned from Chinese Central Television because he needed to take a break from his busy schedule.

CCTV sports director Jiang Heping told the Beijing Youth Daily that Huang's resignation was a personal decision and had nothing to do with his overzealous commentating during the World Cup.

Huang, 38, caused an uproar with a pro-Italy outburst during the live broadcast of a World Cup match from Germany when he shouted "Long Live Italy" and "I don't like Australia" when Italy beat Australia on a last-minute penalty shot to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament.

Although Huang said he needed a break from a work schedule that included more than 200 live games a year, several newspapers said CCTV was unhappy with him because he was making too many public appearances and was also busy writing a book.

Directly after the game, and despite efforts by another on-air anchor to get him to stop talking, Huang told viewers "I don't care about the Australian team and don't want to see Australia have good results in the World Cup."

CCTV later read out an apology by Huang in which he said his comments were inappropriate.
