Vegetable septuagenarian recovering after stroke

TAICHUNG, Taiwan -- A vegetable septuagenarian started speaking again four years after he suffered a stroke, the United Daily News reported yesterday.

In April 2004, Shih Wen-lu, 70, of Taichung, passed out while taking a bath at home. He was taken to the Chungshan Medical University Hospital, where his life was saved following surgery to remove blood clots from his brain. However, he couldn't speak and had to stay in a wheelchair.

His wife, Lee Hsiu-nu, took very good care of the vegetative Shih. One night a year ago, Lee was playing a “game” with her husband at their home. The one who lost had to drink a cup of wine.

The husband lost and his wife poured him a drink and poured it down his throat. Then he passed out. The following morning, he woke up and spoke to his wife, the paper said. “How come the wine bottle was uncapped?” he asked.

Those were the first words Shih uttered in more than four years.

Doctors at the Taichung hospital said it's “a miracle of love.” The wife is fully devoted to her husband.
