Surgeon accused of illegal cosmetic surgery

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Health officials reiterated yesterday that silicone gel implants used in cosmetic plastic surgery was still illegal in Taiwan.

Plastic surgeon Lee Chin-liang (李進良), the son-in-law of famous TV host Hu Gua (胡瓜), illegally performed such surgeries last year before silicone gel implants were approved in Taiwan, said local media outlet United Daily News.

The case was revealed last week as a patirent, surnamed Hong, accused Lee of committing medical error.

Lee allegedly took out her silicone gel implants without her consent during a surgical operation in Lee's plastic surgery clinic Justmake and caused a massive bleeding, Hong told the reporters.

Taipei City's Health Department confirmed they would soon bring in Lee for questioning.

The only approved types of breast implants techniques in the country include saline-filled implants and silicone gel implants, according to the Cabinet-level Department of Health (DOH).

The saline-filled technique contains sterile saline liquid, which would cause less harm if the implant breaks and leaks into the receiver's body, said Artists Plastic Surgery Clinic, owned by famous surgeon James Chang (張炯銘).

DOH official Huang Hsiao-wen reaffirmed that silicone gel implants can only be used in breast reconstruction.

Yet the definition of the patient's need to receive a breast reconstruction is indistictive, added Huang.
