New skin cosmetic laser whitens without hyperpigmentation effect

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Keelung Hospital recently unveiled a new skin resurfacing C6 laser that reportedly delivers results without the dreaded side effect of hyperpigmentation.

Chen Gang-hwa, chair of plastic surgery at the hospital, noted that not only is the course of the non-ablative therapy shorter and less risky, but those who get the treatment also do not have to worry about recovery time, the convenience of which is similar to that of the "lunchtime peel."

The brand new equipment is essentially a yttrium aluminum garnet, or YAG, laser, which utilizes simultaneous dual-wavelength technology, said Chen.

He explained that the laser generates two wavelengths, 1,064 and 532 nanometers, to attack all types of dermatological problems due to the presence of melanin, such freckles, liver spots and moles.

As such, the procedure can even be used for the removal of tattoos and acne scars, said Chen.

Chen added that each session lasts about 5 to 15 minutes and does not require topical anesthesia. Patients are given cold compresses immediately following the treatment and hydrating masks to soothe any slight discomfort.

Chen strongly advised greater sun protection after skin resurfacing.

In related news, doctors at Shutien Clinic in Taipei City also reminded local residents not to neglect the frequent application of sun block during the summer months.

Blind spots such as the arms, calves, top of the head and nape of the neck tend to be overlooked, doctors explained.

According to Zheng Hsing-lung, the vice superintendent of Shutien, sun exposure could lead to photosensitivity, or sun allergies, for certain people, especially those with abnormal immune systems.

Symptoms could develop following 30 minutes of exposure and include bumps or blisters, blotches or rash, Zheng said.

He recommended darker clothing of denser material and the use of umbrellas and hats to shield the sun.
