Doctors urge public to seek vaccination amid cold streak

TAIPEI, Taiwan --Doctors on Friday urged the public to consider vaccination against a number of seasonal diseases amid cold weather conditions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, R.O.C., (CDC) as consecutive cold fronts move through Taiwan, seasonal conditions have propelled cases of pneumonia and influenza to new heights. CDC statistics indicate that in the 15-week period beginning from October of last year to early January, fatalities caused by influenza and pneumonia rose markedly, with contraction rates recording a one- to threefold rise in the post-Chinese New Year holidays period.

As a result, doctors advised the public, in particular people aged 50 and up with chronic illnesses, the elderly aged 65 and up, infants older than 2 months and children and young adults aged from 6 to 17 who are suffering from chronic conditions including asthma, diabetes and heart disease to consider immunization against streptococcus pneumonia.
