TAIPEI--Free lectures will be given this weekend across the nation to help the public understand more about thyroid-related diseases, the Endocrine Society of the Republic of China said yesterday.
Although there has yet to be a study on the number of patients with thyroid-related diseases in Taiwan, more and more cases are being reported in the West, according to Lin Jen-der, a member of the society and an endocrinologist from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in New Taipei's Linkou District.
“We therefore want to get a head start and begin promoting an awareness toward thyroid health in Taiwan,” said Lin at a press conference held to mark World Thyroid Day, which is celebrated annually on May 25.
Discussions this year will focus on hyperthyroidism, its causes, symptoms, treatments and frequently asked questions about the metabolic disorder, he said.
While hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces excessive thyroid hormone and causes weight loss, hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid is under active and causes weight gain.
