Toxic farm scandal hits ginger duck hot pots

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- For many, it is now a good time to nibble at ginger duck hot pots as it is getting chilly with a cold front passing and winter monsoon strengthening. However, since news that duck farms were allegedly contaminated with toxic chemicals broke last week, the business of ginger duck hot pots was not improving, but dropped by 20 percent compared to last year. Apparently, mutton hot pots have taken ginger ducks' place to satisfy islanders' need to warm up, seeing an increase three times more than last year.

Ginger duck is a traditional Taiwanese dish, stewed with wine, ginger and herbs, widely considered nutritious and beneficial to the human body. But fearing ducks were contaminated with toxic chemicals, people are choosing to gobble mutton hot pots instead, which are basically mutton simmered in herbal soup, believed to have the same beneficial effects on humans as ginger duck. Both dishes are served with various ingredients, such as vegetables and noodles.

Despite the spike in sales, mutton hot pot shop owners are not gaining as much profit as people think because the price of mutton has risen to a record high of NT$240 per kg. Many businesses have decided to raise the price of mutton hot pot, such as a popular all-you-can-eat restaurant Zhenglaolin Mutton Hot Pot (正老林羊肉爐), which has 16 branch stores islandwide, has raised its price by thirty NT more to NT$250 per pot, starting Nov. 1.
