The type of plants the center will give the public expertise on will include traditional herbs used for Chinese medicine as well as plants that are used to make modern medicine. The center will be one of the very few of its kind in the world, according to Chen. The few others that exist include the University of Florida Plant Medicine Program and a department of plant medicine from South Korea's Chungbuk National University, said Chen. It is hoped that the center will not only help tackle plant health problems in southern and eastern Taiwan, but also provide plant medicine services to Taiwanese businessmen who are operating botanical, plant or food businesses in mainland China, Southeast Asia or Latin America, Chen said.
