DOH: Peanut products to be destroyed

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Health officials in Taipei County have impounded a shipment of two metric tons of peanut products that were found to have been contaminated by cancer-causing aflatoxin.

Health Bureau officials of the county government said yesterday the products were imported from Vietnam by a company in Banqiao.

The same company had been caught twice previously for marketing similar products with aflatoxin contamination.

The executives said the products, including peanut powder and cakes, were all imported from suppliers in Vietnam.

They said the bulk of the shipment was already distributed to retailers around Taiwan, including a huge discount chain store in Taipei County.

Health officials found the contaminated products at retailing stores and then traced them back to the supplier based in Banqiao.

Products of the same shipment had found their way as far as Chiayi in southwestern Taiwan and Pingtung County in the southern part of the island.

The total amount contaminated exceeded 2,000 kilograms, said health officials.

Aflatoxin contamination normally results from high humidity during the process of storage and transportation.

Executives of the company said they will comply with instructions from the health officials to recall all the products and then destroy them under the supervision.

Suppliers offering tainted food products endangering health are liable to fines from NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 if they fail to recall and destroy the affected products.
