The tourists came from the southern Taiwan city of Tainan. A doctor treating the tourists at Kinmen Medical Clinic said that the disruption of the patients’ digestive system was caused by extreme inflammation of the stomach, and it was likely to have the same origin, as they were a single group and ate the same dishes together. The doctor made the diagnosis after inspecting samples of vomit and excrement from the patients. The 12 tourists remain in hospital, with three still receiving nourishment from drip treatment. The food suspected to have caused the ailment among members of the 32-person tour group during their three-day tour of the island is a dish of fried oyster cake they shared Saturday for lunch in Shueitou Village. The tour guide said one person complained of a sore stomach shortly after eating lunch.
