Next time you work out, have a meal afterward: doctor

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Some of us balk at the idea of post-workout meals: doesn't it seem self-defeating to eat something right after a hard-won battle to burn those calories?

We might want to part with that line of thinking.

According to Dr. Lin Yi-feng, a specialist in general digestion at Chi Mei Medical Center, a light after-workout meal is important to help the body rebuild and prevents the loss of muscle mass as well as metabolic rate drops. So long as the meal is well balanced nutritionally, you shouldn't be concerned that the intake will defeat the purpose of the workout.

Lin said that a meal consisting of a small bento, a 260-ml cup of sugarless soybean milk and a banana is an optimal choice within an hour of a workout.

Consuming foods that are higher in protein during this "golden hour" not only aid in the rebuilding muscle and increasing your metabolism but can actually burn fat, Lin added.
