Light fare is right stuff for armchair athletes

BONN -- Those of us planning to watch as many live television broadcasts of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as possible will have to change our sleep-wake cycle. Due to the time difference at the competition venues, coverage of the Games, from August 8 to 24, will begin in the middle of the night in Central Europe. The shift will affect the bodies of many “armchair athletes,” Antje Gahl, a nutritionist at the Bonn-based German Nutrition Society (DGE), told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Eating a meal to get the body going is not a good idea at such early hours, Gahl said, noting that “the body doesn’t expect food at night.” Digestion is slower at night because the body produces less gastric juice and bile then, she explained, the low point being around 2 am, about the time when TV networks will begin coverage from China.

People who get hunger pangs anyway would do well to munch on light fare like sliced vegetables. Zucchini, carrots, peppers, kohlrabi, and chicory are great for dipping in curd cheese spiced with herbs. Fresh bite-sized pieces of fruit are another option.
