Updated Tuesday, November 10, 2009 9:47 am TWN, The China Post news staff Vaccine for streptococcus pneumoniae to be developedThe existing pneumonia vaccine is mostly directed against diplococcus pneumonia, which is more prevailing in the western hemisphere. Taiwan had adopted such vaccine but most lung infections in Asia were caused by streptococcus pneumoniae, said Wong Chi-huey, President of Academia Sinica. Wong expected to produce the vaccine that is more efficacious in Asian in five to ten years. A Glycoscience Workshop held yesterday and today at the Academia Sinica would aim at scientific exchange and collaboration between Taiwan and Canada. Dr. Roman Szumski, Vice President of Canada's National Research Council, led 10 scientists specialized in glycoscience to join the event and gave a speech yesterday. The workshop addressed such issues as “Infectious Disease Diagnosis” and “Synthesis and Drug Discovery.” The research still has a long way to go, said Wong, adding that the production of the vaccine seemed to be promising with the help from Canada.
