Cases of foot-and-mouth disease reported in Yilan

The China Post news staff--The Yilan County Government (宜蘭縣政府) announced yesterday that cases of foot-and-mouth disease (口蹄疫) were found at a pig farm in Yuanshan Township (員山鄉), adding that 381 pigs have been culled, while the remaining animals have all been vaccinated in order to prevent an epidemic.

Suspected cases of the disease emerged several days ago at two pig farms in Yuanshan, said the county government, noting that several pigs from one of the farms tested positive for the disease.

A total of 381 pigs were culled yesterday, while the rest were vaccinated regardless of whether they had received prior vaccination, officials said. An extensive sterilization of the premises has also been carried out.

Pigs at the other farm did not test positive, but will nevertheless be vaccinated again, said county officials.

According to the county's investigation, a truck had transported pigs from the two aforementioned farms, as well as 14 others, making it a likely transmitter of the disease. The truck was thoroughly sterilized, from the seat to its tires. The other farms that the truck had traveled to were also sterilized, officials said. No abnormal cases were reported within a 3-kilometer radius of the two above-mentioned farms, they said.

Yilan County's Animal and Plant Disease Center (動植物防疫所) urged pig farmers to make sure that their animals are vaccinated, and that farms and trucks are regularly sterilized in order to prevent a potential epidemic.
