H1N1 infects record number of people

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The H1N1 epidemic in Taiwan has infected a record-high number of patients and resulted in a record number of cancelled school classes since the outbreak began in early 2009, according to the United Daily News.

Statistics from the Central Epidemics Command Center (CECC) indicate that 1,627 school classes in Taiwan, from kindergarten to university, have had to be cancelled at some point due to H1N1 infection among students.

The number of affected classes accounts for more than 1 percent of total school classes across Taiwan — the highest level recorded since the spread of the contagious strain of influenza. The number of patients seeking medical treatments for flu-like symptoms in Taiwan reached 2.39 percent of the total population of 23 million, another record high, according to the latest epidemic report.

However, CECC Deputy Director General Chou Jih-haw stressed that once children are vaccinated with H1N1 shots, they will be immunized from the influenza, so parents should not worry. Regarding four recent cases of children who developed a fever after receiving the vaccine, Chou said the children were probably infected by the H1N1 virus before they were inoculated.
