Seven new swine flu cases brings total to 44 in TaiwanOfficials at the center has already notified the World Health Organization of the latest infections, said officials. Shih Wen-yi, a spokesman for the CECC and a senior official at the Center for Disease Control (CDC), said that the seven people had recently returned from Thailand on different days in the last week. Most of the cases exhibited flu-like symptoms such as cough, fatigue and runny nose. But three only showed mild signs of the disease in the form of occasional coughing, explained Shih. Among the seven new cases, three were male students who went to Thailand on graduation trips, while the other four were members of tour groups from Taiwan to the Southeastern Asian country, he said. Shih said all of the seven patients are now in quarantine and are undergoing separate treatment. Individuals who had come into close contact with the patients have been asked to monitor their own condition, even if they have no flu-like symptoms, he added. Shih advised travelers to Thailand not frequent indoor areas where crowds congregate in order to minimize risk of exposure to the virus. He encouraged tourists to instead opt for outdoor recreational activities. Data from the World Health Organization shows that as of June 12, 74 countries had officially reported 29,669 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection, including 145 deaths. | |||||||||||||
