Contact lens sales via Facebook face fines of NT$150,000: FDA

Lin Hsin-hui, a division chief at the FDA, said that the DOH has strictly prohibited online sales of contact lenses and other medical supplies, prompting vendors to try other channels such as Facebook.

But since contact lenses are clearly defined by the DOH as a kind of medical device, they are not allowed to be traded online in any form, and therefore online sales, whether via online auctions, Facebook or blogs, will be fined NT$30,000 to NT$150,000 for violating the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, Lin said.

Lin continued that local health units will conduct regular inspections of online vendors to curb any possible illegal sales of medical supplies.

Lin also called for consumers not to recklessly purchase medical supplies from online shops, street vendors, night markets or tourist buses, lest they should suffer losses in health and money.

Those who find illegal medical products on sale are advised to report the cases directly to local health units or call the exclusive line 0800-285-000.

In case local people suffer from poor quality medical equipment, they should report to the DOH by calling 02-2396-0100, according to Lin.
