Updated Wednesday, October 28, 2009 9:33 am TWN, The China Post news staff All frames, lenses tested sport inadequate labeling: CPCEvery single one of the 202 frames and 77 lenses selected from 41 retailers failed to display consumer-relevant details such as manufacturer information and expiration dates, said the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC). Information pertaining to material and instructions of use were also not shown on packaging, the CPC noted. Most of the lens packaging simply denotes the item's name in English, degrees of myopia and astigmatism, and ultraviolet protection, added the CPC. Three types of lenses in particular did not pass a basic lens retention test, resulting in cracks and pits following the drop impact of a metal spike weighing over 10 kilograms. Regarding unsatisfactory labeling, the agency has urged vendors to revise packaging within a designated grace period. Those who fail to do so could be subject to fines between NT$20,000 and NT$200,000, said the CPC. According to a United Evening News report, most people do not realize that eyeglass salespeople are often not qualified to conduct eye examinations or prescribe and supply eyeglasses. Residents should verify that optometrists are licensed before splurging on a pair of glasses that are nowadays priced in the tens of thousands of NT dollars. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%.
