The drink is enjoyed by many Taiwanese of all ages, especially children. Compared with the Yakult made in Hong Kong, Yakult produced in Taiwan has a slightly larger amount of sugar. A bottle of the Taiwan fermented milk contains 16.7g of carbohydrates, which in turn amounts to more than three sugar cubes, based on nutrition facts. “The level of sugar in Yakult varies from country to country, and it actually depends on people's preference and flavor,” said Chen Po Jui, an advertising officer of Taiwan Yakult in a telephone interview with The China Post. When asked whether the amount of sugar in Taiwan Yakult poses a threat to consumer health, Chen said, “Taiwan Yakult has passed national standards and was qualified by the Taiwan Dept. of Health as health food, which will not jeopardize people's health.” Taiwan Yakult also conducted several tests to ensure the level of sugar in the product will not cause consumers to develop diabetes or any chronic diseases, Chen added.
