Diabetes patients warned to lay off summer sweets

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Those with diabetes are warned to be especially careful of what they eat during the summer, after a rise in cases where diabetes patients unknowingly consumed too much sugar was recently reported. Dr. Lu Ching from Hsin Chu General Hospital said that this rise was mainly due to the increased consumption of sugar-packed iced products and fruits during the summer.

Dr. Lu said that she had a fifty-something year-old diabetes patient, whose blood sugar exceeded 300mg/dl when he consulted her due to eating one to two mangoes per day. She said that the iced drinks and fruits that are popular during the hot summer months are often loaded with sugar, and that fruits such as mangoes, watermelons, lychees, pineapples, and bananas should be consumed in moderation.

She added that those suffering from diabetes should try low-calorie, low-sugar alternatives, and consume fruits or fruit-juice in moderation.
