Health > Cold-Flu
A Taiwanese research team has discovered a molecule in human cells that can regulate inflammation when infections caused by invasive pathogenic germs occur and help protect the body from systemic inflammation, known as sepsis.
Last week alone saw 338 new cases of severe flu complications, 15 of which resulted in death, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 疾管局) announced Tuesday.
The spread of a puzzling respiratory virus in the Middle East and beyond is not a global health emergency despite a recent spike in cases, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.
The flu is hitting young and middle aged people in the United States particularly hard this season, as a tough flu strain re-emerged and too few people were vaccinated, health authorities said Thursday.
Doctors yesterday called for people to receive influenza vaccination injections soon as the reported cases of flu rocketed in this month.
Taiwan's top research institute has found a better way to design influenza vaccines that do not require frequent updates and annual immunizations.
Health authorities confirmed Tuesday the infection of H7N9 in a person entering Taiwan from China, the second imported infection of the virus since April.
Doctors have urged children and elderly people to take quadrivalent influenza vaccines (QIV), which can protect them from all four strains of human flu.
Repeated warnings that antibiotics don't work for most sore throats and bronchitis have failed to stop overuse: U.S. doctors prescribed these drugs for most adults seeking treatment at a rate that remained high over more than a decade, researchers found.
A Chinese poultry worker was confirmed as having contracted the deadly H7N9 bird flu virus, health officials said, the first case in the southern Guangdong province.
