Standard procedures to be set for body check

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Department of Health (DOH) promised to set a standard operating procedure for body inspections of school children by the end of Feb., in response to the proposal of Kuomintang (KMT) legislator, Chao Li-yun (趙麗雲).

There were two complaints from secondary school girls last year about the way doctors examined their abdominal hernias. They said the doctors did not give any explanations before asking them to take off their pants. They felt humiliated and hurt.

Chao said there have been more than 30 similar complaints since 2006. She said setting up a standard operating procedure would help to protect the privacy and feelings of the school children. Doctors should explain to the patients what they are doing before examining their bodies.

DOH and the Ministry of Education will invite experts to work on the details of the standard procedures and set up the draft by the end of Feb.
