Grenoble troupe to play in Taipei

The Jean-Claude Gallota Groupe Emile Dubois dance troupe from Grenoble, France, arrived in Taiwan Monday night to stage three shows at the National Chiang Kai-shek Cultural Center.

The troupe of 16 will perform three shows at the National Theater on Friday and Saturday. There will be two performances on Saturday, which will include one geared for children in the afternoon.

According to Jean Ripahette, the tour manager for the company, the dancers will not utilize any stage props or costumes. Everything will be presented in the simplest fashion, he said.

Ripahette hoped the Taiwan audience will enjoy the shows, which are made to be both entertaining and humorous. Because there will be no dialogue in the show, the dancers will have to rely upon body language to interact with the audiences, he added.

The company is made up of 13 dancers from several countries. Aside from the nine French nationals, there are two Japanese, one Korean and one American.

Among the dancers, Kae Kurachi and Massa Sugiyama, expressed interest in several sights of interest in Taipei. Most importantly, they are anticipating a trip to a massage parlor before the show to relax themselves.

Ripahette said the troupe was derived from the first dance company to perform in Nigeria. He has already traveled to several different countries but this is his first time in Taiwan. He eagerly expressed his excitement over experiencing the cultural aspects Taiwan has to offer.

The company will leave on Sunday and continue their tour in Seoul, Korea.
