Women archers win Taiwan's 1st Athens medal

Taiwan women's team defeated their French competitors 242-228 to take the bronze medal in the archery tournament yesterday, giving the island its first medal at the Athens Olympic Games.

The team of archers Yuan Shu-chi, Wu Hui-ju, and Chen Li-ju reached the final four with a 233-230 victory over Germany in the quarterfinals.

The Taiwanese had two archers in the top six of the individual event. Yuan missed out on the individual bronze medal by one point.

When facing China in a separate game in the semifinals, the Taiwan team lost 226-230 to their rivals from the opposite side of the Taiwan Strait.

In an earlier contest the Taiwan archers beat Japan 240-226 in the elimination round.

The three members of the Taiwan team will each receive a cash prize of NT$4 million plus an honor medal from the government for winning the bronze medal.

South Korea confirmed their place as the queens of women's archery with a 241-240 victory over China to take the women's archery team gold medal.

It was the Koreans' fifth successive Olympic gold in the event, a record stretching back to the 1988 Games in Seoul and it was also their second of the Athens Games following Park Sung-Hyun's success in the women's event.

In a 27-arrow shootout, individual gold medallist Park Sung-hyun fired a maximum 10-point score with the last shot to clinch the title 241-240.

Meanwhile, four members of Taiwan's taekwondo team departed for Athens late last night. They will have to make a transit in Italy before flying to Greece.
