HANOI, Vietnam -- An air force fighter jet crashed during a training exercise in northern Vietnam, but the pilot ejected and escaped unhurt, a military official said Saturday.
The aging Russian-made MiG21 crashed into a corn field in Thai Nguyen province during the exercise Friday, said the official with Pho Yen District military command who identified himself only as Duc.
Thai Nguyen is 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of Hanoi.
"Luckily, it crashed into the corn field," he said, "There were many houses near the field."
Duc said the pilot reported a technical problem three minutes before losing radio contact. The weather was clear at the time of the crash.
Several accidents involving aging fighter jets have been reported in Vietnam in recent years.
