CPC discovers natural gas reserve in Tainan County

Chinese Petroleum Corp. (CPC) has recently uncovered a previously-unknown natural gas well in Guantien, Tainan County, the home of President Chen Shui-bian.

According to CPC, the area contains an estimated 400 million cubic meters of natural gas, which can generate some NT$2.5 billion in revenue for the next 20 years.

CPC officials were hoping to set up the Guantien 1 natural gas well before Chen's inauguration on May 20 as a gift for the president but the process was delayed by technical problems. The CPC is excited about the expedition in Tainan County, which means that other spots in the Chianan Plain may also generate natural gas.

The company initially was pessimistic about discovering any natural gas at all in Guantine but decided to give it a try anyway by digging a well south of the Lungtien Train Station. Luckily, its first try worked out and the well is now up and running in the midst of a rice field.
