Lady White V

After their marriage, Xu Xian and Lady White open a herb store at Hangzhou. The apothecary enjoys a very brisk business, because Xiao Qing spreads poisonous herbs at Hangzhou and its neighboring towns and villages to cause an epidemic. Patients flock to the apothecary to buy medicinal herbs prescribed by Lady White to get cured.

But it's against the law of Heaven to have a human and an ogress married as a couple. So Heaven causes a plague to hit Hangzhou which is soon on the verge of becoming extinct. As a consequence, Lady White has to sue for a truce with Fahai, who grants it. But Fahai wants to eliminate White Lady when she becomes pregnant. He bides time. The time to strike is the fifth day of the fifth moon on the Chinese lunar calendar. The people celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival on that day. Also on that day, demons and ogress are likely to revert to their true selves.

Lady White wants to go back to her limbo on the occasion of the Dragon Boat Festival so that her husband may not see a white snake ogress she really is. And she wants to take Xu Xian to the limbo with her. But Fahai succeeds in getting Xu Xian to force his wife to drink realgar wine. She turns herself back into the 1,000-year-old white snake. Xu Xian is scared to death. Lady White has to steal grass of immortality to revive her husband.

She is able to give birth to a son. Then she cannot control herself any more. She confesses to Xu Xian about her origins. He forgives her and accepts her as his wife. But Fahai still wants to destroy Lady White, who is weakened by childbirth. He has a Skanda to catch Lady White and put her to eternal capacity under Lei-feng ta (雷峰塔) or Thunder Peak Pagoda. A Skanda, incidentally, is a Buddhist god guarding the temple.
