So he knelt before the old man and bowed deeply to request that he be made a disciple. But as he called “Master,” Moginlin awoke. There was no old man there. But there was the hatchet right before where Moginlin had fallen asleep. It was near nightfall. So Moginlin picked up the hatchet and started to look for somewhere to pass the night. As he plodded on, he was able to see some light afar. So he quickened his pace, and came to a very small thatched house. He knocked at the door, calling “Is anybody in?” The door was opened. And out came an old neighbor, Xiao-qing () or Little Blue. Surprised, Moginlin asked the girl next door he knew very well, “How come you are here? All alone in the middle of nowhere?” “I didn’t want to stay at home in the village,” Little Blue replied. “There’s nothing to do at home,” she said, adding: “I’d better come here to stay away from home.” She appeared frivolous and flippant. Something must be wrong, Moginlin said to himself. Xiao-qing used to be a good girl, very obedient to her parents from whom she could not run away. “The Xiao-qing before me may be a devil, who wants to seduce me,” Moginlin told himself. So he tried to hack her shoulder with the hatchet the old man had left him. As the hatchet fell, Little Blue disappeared into the thin air. He could only hear a long laughing sound. Then he heard someone sob. The sobbing was that of his mother’s. “Mother,” he called. She did not appear at his calling. He cried, knowing full well his mother was suffering in Hell, but he could do nothing to help her. He cried himself to sleep, then. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
