India’s ‘9-11’

Yesterday, police in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) declared that the siege of the city by unknown numbers of terrorists was over. So far, at least 195 people have been confirmed killed in the attacks, which took three days for police and armed forces to overcome.

We applaud the heroic efforts of police and soldiers in India, many of whom risked their lives to try and rescue innocent victims during standoffs with gunmen. The attacks, which were directed against innocent foreign residents and tourists, have been roundly condemned by world leaders.

We were pleased to see that the government of Pakistan joined in the calls to punish the perpetrators of these senseless acts of violence. While it is still not clear who or what organization is behind the attacks, we genuinely hope that this terrible incident will not lead to military confrontation between South Asia’s two nuclear powers.

At the same time, we want to see the international community take more effective action against terrorist groups that operate across national borders. While we do not want to see our precious freedoms curbed any more than necessary, something has to be done to protect the safety of innocent people who are made into cannon fodder for groups with political agendas.

Like the rest of the world, people in Taiwan are growing tired of the terrorists’ purported justifications for committing ruthless acts of violence against innocent people. No matter how admirable their causes may be or what horrible experiences the terrorists claim to have been through, the terrorists’ methods are unacceptable.

If terrorists wanted to capture the world’s attention, they have achieved their goal. But if the terrorists wanted to gain sympathy from the rest of the world, they have completely failed.
