Time ripe to celebrate annual World Industrial Design Day

Today, we are celebrating the seventh World Industrial Design Day (World ID Day, 世界工業設計日 臺), an annual celebration recognizing the industrial design profession. The event was established in 2007 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID), a nonprofit organization that protects and promotes the profession of industrial design, to advocate worldwide on behalf of professional designers in areas such as design standards, appreciation of professional achievement, fair practices, sustainable development and support of intellectual property rights from technology to traditional knowledge and crafts.

Every year, the World ID Day attempts to address the needs and aspirations of people around the world and improve the economy and quality of life worldwide. It is also an opportunity to enhance public appreciation for design by showcasing the many different design-driven initiatives that exist in the city and how they are vital to its function. In light of Taipei's recent designation as the World Design Capital 2016 (WDC), this year's World ID Day can also help showcase Taiwan's capital city as a design destination, leading to the creation of more investment opportunities and job openings in the design sector.

To this end, Taiwanese entrepreneurs and government authorities should further recognize the profession of industrial designer by highlighting their contributions to their company or government agency via website and social media pages. Leading companies should also use the opportunity of World ID Day to host open-door events that provide the everyday person with an exclusive opportunity to peek into a world, so few of us get the chance to see. Why not invite the community, local design school graduates or your staff's children to your factory or design studio free of charge to learn more about your company and its products or manufacturing process?

Without a doubt, the World ID Day is not an event that only affects designers; it affects both designers and consumers alike. Industrial design relates to every product that we use and the way that these products and manufactured. For the non-designer, such an event presents a unique opportunity to become aware of the benefits of industrial design and learn more about how it impacts our lives.

According to the British Design Council, when businesses implement design thinking, its boosts product creation, exports and the word everyone likes to hear — profits. The independent British charity estimates that for every 1 pound (NT$51) spent on design gives your company over 20 pounds (NT$1,020) in increased revenue, 4 pounds (NT$204) increased profit and 5 pounds (NT$255) in increased exports. A very nice and handy reminder we should all use in our next discussion with a business leader or decision maker. More importantly, design thinking also has a meaningful impact on the way a workplace looks and operates, as well as the general well being of its staff; a few things most employers and office workers are looking forward to in these difficult economic times.
