Updated Friday, November 6, 2009 9:27 am TWN, The China Post news staff Taitung miracle makingKuang Lih-cheng, the outgoing woman magistrate, is running unopposed for a seat in the Legislative Yuan that a Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker just vacated to stand for Kuang's office. She is a master horse trader. Her husband, Wu Chun-lih, was disqualified as magistrate of Taitung for corruption shortly after his election in 2005. He had to divorce her on paper so that she might be made a deputy magistrate. She then ran and won a by-election to become magistrate in her own right. Of course, Kuang wanted to run for re-election. So she took part in KMT primaries and lost. The ruling party nominated the legislator, who had to quit in order to run to succeed her. She vowed to run to the bitter end, risking the chance of getting expelled from her KMT. Then, perhaps, a deal was made in a smoke-filled room. She withdrew from the race and stood for the vacated seat in parliament. There's little doubt Kuang will be elected to the legislature. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
