Don't be sillyPerhaps Chai thought he could get away unscathed, for many a DDP leader worked wonders by falsely accusing Ma in the past. Remember that Ma was accused of carrying an American passport first and then holding a “green card,” the certificate of permanent residence in the United States, during the long 2008 presidential campaign? Ma was also charged with taking a morning dip while Typhoon Morakot wreaked havoc in central and southern Taiwan in last August. So why not follow suit, Chai must have thought. He did and he is in trouble now. One thing the opposition leaders are good at is creating a huge fuss over non-issues by fabrication, weaving a few facts with a lot of false accusations, the purpose being not to deal a coup de grace but to smear rivals or make insinuations about their wrongdoing to gain an advantage in elections. For instance, Chai claimed the transfer of hydrological data took place at the Beijing meeting. There was such a meeting, though the nation's alleged top secret was not compromised. Neither Ma nor Su could deny the meeting and were forced to produce an alibi. This time around, all those charged with giving away the secret were not in Beijing. Hence Chai's predicament. On the other hand, everybody knows the PLA navy can obtain the data, though not very easily, by probing the waters around Taiwan. Actually, it has been doing that for quite some time. Its oceanic survey ships have been frequenting our territorial waters, and the previous DPP administration dared not try to prevent it in the first place. Moreover, the PLA does not want to and cannot make use of our hydrological date to ferry division after infantry division across the Taiwan Strait with heavy escort and air cover for the invasion of the island, if Taipei ever declares independence. Time was when President Chen Shui-bian was trying to rewrite the Constitution to found a republic of Taiwan. Ma has never shown any indication of wanting to do this at all, and relations across the strait have been peaceful since he was inaugurated on May 20 last year. There won't be war between Taiwan and China. We hope that Su Chi will not initiate litigation against Chai and company. All he needs to do is to tell them: “Don't be silly.” | |||||||||||||
