Chen Shui-bian will be remembered for 10,000 years

Chen certainly is not a man worth idolizing. In his last deposition at the court, Chen, who admitted he did “something the law does not allow,” put all the blame on his wife, who pleaded guilty of taking the money which she said was political contributions. He created an alibi for himself, too. In defense of his innocence, he created what he calls “social guilt.” He argued, to the best of his defense lawyer's ability, that he is responsible for commission of an offense, which is no crime. He meant his social guilt is his “remorseful awareness of having done something wrong” and “self-reproach for supposed inadequacy or wrongdoing.”

President Bill Clinton did not try to claim social guilt, when he was acquitted by the U.S. Senate over “Lewinsky Gate.” Richard N. Nixon resigned as president over Watergate. President Roh Moo-Hyun of South Korea committed suicide before he was indicted for the bribes his wife allegedly took. Chen isn't like any of them. He is a coward trying whatever he can — making his wife a handy scapegoat — to save his skin and “repute.”

His fans are more than ready to believe his social guilt theory. They will continue to dance to the tune of their Taiwan independence godfather.

We do not mind their continued wholehearted support for their ex-President Chen. Taiwan is a free country, albeit its social fabric is fraying — fast after ex-President Chen came to power in 2000. Everybody is entitled to support any politician he likes, even if that politician is a proven crook and liar. All we wish is that they don't make any more noise to disturb our hard-earned communal harmony, which President Chen did his best to destroy by stoking the almost-forgotten feud between native-born islanders and “mainlanders,” those Han Chinese migrants who arrived in Taiwan after 1945 and their offspring born and brought up on the island.

As a matter of fact, Chen's fans should celebrate his conviction and life imprisonment. Chen wants to go down in history as a “great man.” There was a great general, Huan Wen (312-373), who tried to usurp the throne in vain. He is believed to leave us a dictum: “A great man, if he cannot leave his fame behind for 1,000 years, should (try to) leave his stinking repute behind for 10,000 years.”

General Huan did leave his stinking repute behind for 17 centuries, much longer than 1,000 years. Chen will be remembered as the “great man” leaving his unprecedented obnoxious repute behind for 10,000 years to come.

That's no mean accomplishment, which should be cause for celebration by Chen's enthusiastic fans. They should be so amply satisfied so as to forgo any more mass rallies that will be nothing but a totally unjustifiable social disturbance.

Former president Chen Shiu Bian, the man who wasted 8 years of time to become one of the history's respected characters, instead spent most of his time intimidating and finding ways to get money, diverted to his wife, children and associates. Chen did nothing but enrich his family, without serving 22 million people in Taiwan. Pres. Chen Shiu Bian will be remembered as the first and the most corrupt president in Taiwan history.

KMT is far more corrupt than DPP's Chen Shui-bian. They are guilty of 228 war crimes in comparison with white collar crimes of Chen. Crimes against humanity are more grave than crimes against society. Keep these in perspective in your quick rush to judgment of Chen and your defense of a "bench trial" by ROC judges. Jury trials are a check and balance on judicial powers.
That is something that makes American separation of powers superior to the ROC abuses of power on Taiwan.

What a joke ...

Nobody remembers how much James Soong and those other KMT [expletive deleted] stole.

The only people who will remember Chen are pro-China [expletive deleted] like you.

The wrongdoings of past must not live to today. They serve as remembrance or memorial that this "thing" must not happen again. Yes, I know, there are a lot of corrupt governments around the world. The problem with Chen is that he is promoting good image about "himself" while planting hatred among the innocent people living in Taiwan or elsewhere. His craftiness pushing peace loving people to believe in his cause that these peace loving people may do bad things. A wolf disguised as sheep. I am pro-life and peace.
