Updated Tuesday, January 6, 2009 9:33 am TWN, The China Post news staff Get ready to butt-outSumming up the restrictions, Yau Sea-wain, president of the anti-tobacco John Tung Foundation said, “Under the new rules, any place selling cigarettes is limited to providing the customer with the cigarette's brand and its price. Any actions beyond this limitation will be considered violations.” Establishments may not actively market or display tobacco-related advertising and the practice of giving free cigarettes to customers who spend more than a certain amount will also be banned — with a penalty of half a million NT for offenders. Even duty-free shops at the nation's airports will fall under the broad regulations. There will be no more in-flight cigarette advertising and airlines cannot actively promote duty-free tobacco products. While the new laws may at first inconvenience some, in the long run we can all agree the health of Taiwan will improve as a result. For more information on the rules, visit www.e-quit.org.
