Get ready to butt-out

In a little less than two weeks, Taiwan initiates new anti-smoking laws that will affect where people smoke, how much cigarettes cost and how stores and other establishments display and advertise tobacco products. Coming into effect on Jan. 11th, the new regulations prohibit smoking in any indoor public place — including KTVs, offices, restaurants and other areas. Venue owners who allow their patrons to smoke will face heavy fines for non-compliance. The new rules will also impact supermarkets, convenience store chains, restaurants and even betel nut stands.

Summing up the restrictions, Yau Sea-wain, president of the anti-tobacco John Tung Foundation said, “Under the new rules, any place selling cigarettes is limited to providing the customer with the cigarette's brand and its price. Any actions beyond this limitation will be considered violations.”

Establishments may not actively market or display tobacco-related advertising and the practice of giving free cigarettes to customers who spend more than a certain amount will also be banned — with a penalty of half a million NT for offenders. Even duty-free shops at the nation's airports will fall under the broad regulations. There will be no more in-flight cigarette advertising and airlines cannot actively promote duty-free tobacco products. While the new laws may at first inconvenience some, in the long run we can all agree the health of Taiwan will improve as a result. For more information on the rules, visit www.e-quit.org.
