Questions about Maokong

The Maokong gondola used to be one of the hottest tourist attractions in Taipei. The cable car service lifted visitors to a mountainous area in the suburban district of Muzha known for its tea plantations, teahouses and restaurants, attracting tens of thousands of visitors.

But the system was suspended after some of the system’s 25 bases for cable towers eroded in mudslides caused by successive typhoons.

Civil engineering and other professional experts will make a formal inspection report next month, but it is looking as if it will take an additional three to four months to complete the repairs and reinforcement work.

The general public needs to rest assured of the system’s safety before they will re-embrace it.

An explanation as to why such erosion was not contemplated before now is also needed. Typhoons and mudslides are a constant feature of life in Taiwan. That they were not factored into the original plans is cause for deep concern.
