Keep knocking at the door

Although a non-starter, Taiwan’s bid to join the United Nations will be given a chance now for the 15th year in a row. But unlike the past 14 years, this year the bid is made in the name of Taiwan, not the ROC. It’s calling a spade a spade — that’s why the name is different this year, according to President Chen Shui-bian, who insisted on the change in two letters to the U.N. Secretariat, which refused to receive them.

Nonetheless, the application was submitted by Taiwan’s diplomatic allies for debate at the General Committee to decide whether to put the issue on the agenda of the General Assembly, which opens in New York today. The outcome is a foregone conclusion. But as the Chinese saying goes, “failure is the mother of success.” President Chen knows this more than anybody else, saying frankly the purpose is to “make noise” by letting the world know the absurdity of excluding 23 million people from the world body.
