Courtesy increasingly rare among the young

The Taipei City Department of Education has started a campaign to make students respect the disadvantaged by meting punishment to students who fail to offer their seats in the MRT to the elderly and others in need. The measure deserves acclaim because it should help restore a rare quality among the young.

Under the “Traffic Courtesy Week” campaign, students occupying priority seats on the MRT will be punished. Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin said educating students to respect the elderly and helping disabled individuals is crucial.

Priority seats on the MRT are reserved for senior citizens and disabled people. However, they are often occupied by healthy students, even when old or physically challenged people are standing right in front of them.

The city government’s measure is long overdue. It should be implemented strictly.
