'Moving Toy Castle' delivers childhood fun

The China Post--From northern Taoyuan County to southern Kaohsiung City, you can regularly spot a shinny and a colorful van almost every once or twice week at remote rural villages around the country.

The van always carries a wide range of toys appropriate for children of all ages.

It is dubbed by its owner Lin Chun-yin (林君英) as a “Moving Toy Castle” (玩具移動城堡).

Lin and his van are not selling toys, in case you were wondering. As a matter of fact, the car serves as a mobile toy library when new toys are less accessible and affordable for those in underprivileged families in remote mountainous districts.

Since 2007, Lin, his wife and two sons, regularly visit rural villages around the island as part of his plan to bring joy and happiness to children and to enrich their memories in early stages of life.

It was done because of his strong belief that toys are an important part of early childhood.

“Children can learn new inspiration from toys, as well as learn to work with others through the toy-sharing process,” said Lin, secretary-general of Toy Library Association Taiwan.

The Origin of Mobile Toy Library

The idea of a so-called toy library has been in Taiwan for years, according Lin.

Toys have always been a favorite gift for children of all ages. But toys are not always affordable for underprivileged families in Taiwan in comparison with families of means.

Therefore, the idea of setting up a library for second-hand toys was come upon nearly a decade ago in Taiwan, he added.

So far, his association has such libraries in several major cities around the country.

However, Lin said such libraries that are located mostly in cities are not accessible to children in remote mountainous areas. Therefore, in 2007, he launched the so-called “mobile toy library.”
