Updated Friday, October 14, 2005 0:00 am TWN, The China Post staff Chen vows to resign if involved in MRT scamHe told Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government leaders he wanted to found what he called an independent probity committee that would look into scandals. Should the committee want to investigate him, President Chen said at a top-level discussion meeting, he would gladly be questioned. The committee, which should comprise only “men of integrity in society,” may opt to investigate the Kaohsiung Metro scandal, which came to light following a riot by Thai workers in the southern Taiwan port city in last August. “And if found involved in that scandal — whether involved illegally or given bribes or found to have shielded the guilty — I would step down and bow out,” President Chen vowed. That alone, Chen added, can prove that the DPP is a responsible and accountable party. His promise was a follow-up to his order on last Friday to Yeh Chu-lan, acting mayor of Kaohsiung, to complete in two weeks an administrative investigation of the possible involvement in the Metro scandal of all the mayors before her. One of the former mayors under probe is Premier Frank Hsieh, who attended the discussion meeting at the Government Guest House in Taipei last night. Among other participants were Annette Lu, vice president; Yu Shyi-kun, secretary-general to the president; and Su Tsen-chang, DPP chairman. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
