Sea warning for typhoon could be issued: CWB

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) reported yesterday that it will probably issue a sea warning for Typhoon Talim this morning, which could affect Taiwan in the next few days.

At 9 p.m. last night, Talim was located at 125 kilometers northwest of Guam, moving in a west-northwest direction at a speed of 22 km per hour, with maximum wind speeds of 130 km per hour, the CWB reported.

Talim, the 13th typhoon reported in the Pacific this year, could affect Taiwan on Wednesday if it continues gaining strength and moving in its present direction, the CWB said.

There is also a chance that the typhoon will lose strength over the following two days if a high pressure system in the Pacific Ocean weakens. If this is the case, says the weather bureau, the storm will shift to a more northward direction, thus sparing Taiwan from being directly affected.

Another typhoon, named Nabi, has developed and was located at latitude 15.0 degrees north and longitude 152.4 degrees east at 8 p.m. yesterday. The 14th typhoon reported in the Pacific this year, Nabi is currently moving in a west-northwest direction at 18 km per hour.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau predicted that hot summer weather will continue around the island over the next couple of days, while eastern Taiwan could see sporadic rain beginning today as the outer rim of Talim moves closer to Taiwan.

The bureau warned local media against making exaggerated reports about Talim. “Media organizations that fail to base their forecasts on the information released by the CWB or exaggerate the impact of the typhoon will face a fine of up to NT$1 million (US$31,250),” said the bureau in a statement.
