Hillary's blunder with PyongyangIf one looks logically at a spoiled child, a brat or a teenage terror, yes then Hillary's comments have true merit. Don't give them attention, a pedestal or give in to tantrums. But will the pop psychology fit for a morning chat show play in Pyongyang? Hardly! Let's just say that the North Koreans, having lost face, quickly returned the insult. What is less predictable remains their likely response. Clinton told an ABC news program that the U.S. played down recent North Korean missile firings over the 4th of July weekend as not to give them the “satisfaction they were looking for, which was to elevate them to center stage.” Smart move. Then, she added, “Maybe it's the mother in me, the experience I've had with small children and teenagers and people who are demanding attention: Don't give it to them.” Let's get real. The quaintly titled Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is one of the world's most brutal totalitarian systems, a threat to its own starving population and a military menace to neighboring South Korea. The regime which echoes Stalin's Soviet Union or Mao's China still has a formidable military punch, now enhanced by its nuclear weapons. This is not a spoiled schoolyard brat, but a still lethal regional threat. At the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), North Korea's nuclear program was widely condemned by regional delegates. Secretary Clinton stated clearly, “The United States and its allies and partners cannot accept a North Korea that tries to maintain nuclear weapons, to launch ballistic missiles or to proliferate nuclear materials.” Right, but what precisely are we do? Think about the consequences. She added, “There is no place to go for North Korea; they have no friends left that will protect them from the international community's efforts to move towards denuclearization.” Perhaps not formal friends, but in Beijing, they may still hold hidden interests with its erstwhile comrade. Comments July 25, 2009 tomdavie@ Reply your whole diatribe of a post FORGOT to mention everyone and their DOG has been using 'quiet and cool diplomacy' for decades with the North Koreans. Here is a piece of advice. If you want to put Hillary down, try not to insult our intelligence by doing it. July 25, 2009 GEO95WA@ If you were in touch with the real reality you would know that the average American citizen completely agrees with Hillary and continually wonder why the misguided pols want to bribe the NK at all! July 26, 2009 MystWlker@ It's probably a good thing that she's not the one answering the phone call at 3 a.m. July 26, 2009 c_of_red@ Nonsense! The Norks need to be taken to the woodshed, hard.2 hours to take down their AD, then another 4 hours of airstrikes to knock out their C&C for all those buried tubes facing Seoul. Then put a 2,000 Lb JDAM in Kim's Palace every 5 minutes until he cries Uncle or he is dead. The ONLY solution to the DPRK problem is regime change. The ONLY way to accomplish that is through military action. Considering the Norks have at best a 4th rate military and they are starving to death millions of people, military action is the only rational, human and moral solution. Anything else is both cowardly, dishonorable and murderous to millions of innocent North Koreans. The DPRK is running a bluff. Time to call them. | |||||||||||||
