Life is a lot bigger than the world you see on Facebook

Dear Editor,

I'm writing in reply to the "Are the friends you have on Facebook really your friends?" letter you published recently.

Over the last few years, Facebook has become a phenomenon for the social networking set. In fact, Facebook's impact on society goes far beyond meeting friends and sharing pictures. Most users believe that Facebook is a good way to express themselves, but most people do not know Facebook has potential negative influences on users if they become addicted.

For instance, when you are taking the MRT or walking down the street, it is not hard to spot people using their smartphones to surf Facebook. Between classes and during work, people update their status on Facebook. There are more and more people spending a lot of time in front of a computer. They log into Facebook and interact with friends. However, we often lose track of time when we're chatting online, making comments, sending emoticons, and posting pictures.

If people spend too much time on Facebook and become addicted, I suggest getting outdoors to get close to nature, doing exercise and socializing with people in the real world. Or you could always deactivate your Facebook account for a few months and see if it can do any help to your real life.
