Calm head is key to avoiding being swindled by con rings

Dear Editor,

I would like to express my opinion on the recent spate of women narrowly escaping getting swindled by con rings.

In recent years, con rings have developed more and more sophisticated tactics to defraud people. Although anti-fraud organizations are trying to put the spotlight on these crimes in order to prevent others from being cheated, there are still many victims.

Pretending to have kidnapped a family member in order to swindle money is not a new scam, but still more people are deceived by it. A woman in Pingtung County of southern Taiwan had a narrow escape from delivering a large sum of money to a con ring on May 15. When she received the news that her husband and son were kidnapped, she did not verify the fact and immediately rushed to pay the money to the con ring.

People should be more cautious after being contact by possible scammers, and should make an effort to read or understand the details of the message they received, and make a phone call to connect their family first. Then, go on the Internet to search relevant news and see if this is a new tactic being used by con rings. After that, contact the police for assistance. Stay calm and do everything you can to confirm the real details.
