Thank you for extraordinary Deaflympics

Maryland, U.S. -- I am writing to thank the people of Taiwan and the Deaflympics organizers for an extraordinary experience with the 2009 Deaflympics. My son is a U.S. track athlete participating in the games. The Taiwanese support for the games and welcome for the international deaf community and families has been amazing. The people we have met throughout the city, the athletes and the Deaflympics volunteers have been genuinely friendly, extremely helpful and remarkably easy to communicate with. The amazing opening ceremony and the plans for the closing ceremony are a testament to the Taiwanese commitment to make this event first-rate.

The cross-cultural celebration of the athlete's abilities is an ideal catalyst for communication. We all honor the athletes' talents, dedication, hard work, and striving for real excellence. The “Power in Me” theme captures the effect of this experience on my athlete and, I'm sure, the others.

The Deaflympics and our experience of Taiwan have been unforgettable. For my family — and many others around the world — we offer the country of Taiwan and its people our thanks.
