While the people all over Taiwan, together with the central and local government, grapple with the loss of lives and the massive destruction of property, society seems to be attacked by another sinister and more fatal phenomenon. Who is focusing on the earnest effort to reach out to peoples and to cut down losses? Do we praise the spirit of voluntarism that has been manifested, and the generous contribution of private citizens as well as government that are aimed at promoting life and the rebuilding of society? Can we rejoice at the good being done? Seemingly not! What is the talk we hear in our streets? What is prominently aired by radio, television and the press? Why is there so much cynicism? Why are we allowing anger and division to cut right through the moral fabric of our life and of Taiwan society? As a small group of ICM Sisters who have been privileged to live in Taiwan for the last 50 years, we are deeply pained to see the growing forces of anger and fragmentation hovering over our beautiful island. We do sympathize with the people who have lost family and property from Morakot. We are standing behind the continuing efforts of people and government to respond to the crisis. And we pray that in the process, we may find the key that allows us to see and appreciate the good, to believe in one another, and to harness the positive energy within and among us that promotes peace and harmony.
