The Wild Strawberries have already reached thousands

Leiden University, The Netherlands -- In response to Daniel Bauer's article on Nov. 23rd:

'We, the people.' These are the first words of the constitution of the United States of America. We the people in the 21st century have given us a democratic communication structure called the Web 2.0.

The Web is representing the opinions of millions of bloggers and is used by hundreds of millions of visitors. The Web is forming a community stronger than every national government. The Web is writing the history of the future.

The success of a protest cannot be measured only by the number of participants on the streets anymore. From this point of view, the Wild Strawberries' candle is burning only for a while and they will be a footnote in history. But that is the thinking of 20th century. The KMT might control the local media in Taiwan, but they have no access on international media or the Internet which are the battlegrounds they already lost.

Bloggers from all over the world are supporting the Strawberries. They are weak and unimportant on their own, but in a community of bloggers they already reached hundreds of thousands, maybe millions of people around the planet. Important NGOs from Paris to Washington start to listen.

The history of the past was written in books a long time after the events, usually by the people in power. Today's history is written in an organic and everyday-growing new medium and the references are Google, Wikipedia or YouTube.

For students who have to write an essay on history and people who want to inform themselves, they all use these sources first. The story they will read about Taiwan, regardless if true or not is about a brutal government and brave students who were fighting for democracy and their basic rights.

That is not a development a country depending so strong on exports wants, and it is completely underestimated by the government.

The old men in politics do not even realized they have already lost the battle. When newspapers are already rotten or recycled, We the People have written our own history.

Politicians need to adjust their mind to a 21st century world if they want to survive.
